Monet and poppies

We set off to Gare St-Lazare to catch the train to Vernon, then bus to Monet's garden. The day turned cool and overcast but the 40 minute train journey was enjoyable in 1st class with our 2nd class tickets!! From the bus park, we walked through the streets of Giverny to the long queue outside the house and garden entrance. First the house and the crowd - along with teenagers and primary school groups, we edged our way from room to room, each filled with memories of a great artist and his love of japanese art works. It was a relief to leave the house for the relative peace of the house garden. The flowers were in full bloom and even though it was light rain, we wandered through the heavily scented archways and across to the famous lily pond and bridge.

The pond was covered in lilies and we stood on what appeared to be a rather new bridge, but who cares. We were in the garden. We wandered back into the village for hot lunch and another vin rouge, then retraced our steps to the bus and train. More supplies were bought for our evening supper, including another champagne. We are sampling the cheaper varieties and this one was a whole euro dearer than the last - it was only E1.25!! Another day of tired feet.
